Diabetes Symptoms

Diabetes mellitus more commonly known and diabetes is metabolic disease. A resultant of defects in the secretion or action of insulin, or both is characterized by high blood sugar levels.

Pancreas one of the endocrine glands secretes insulin, which is responsible for controlling the level of blood sugar in the body. Insulin lowers the blood glucose level; it is produced by the pancreas every time hyperglycemia or elevation of blood sugar occurs.

Diabetes is a chronic medical condition, because despite the fact that it can be cured and controlled, it lasts a lifetime. In diabetics hyperglycemia is caused due to insufficient production or absence of insulin.

Diabetes over prolonged period of time becomes a significant factor in acceleration of arteriosclerosis (hardening and narrowing of arteries. this increases the chances of strokes, coronary heart diseases and other blood vessel diseases. Diabetics also chances of kidney failures, nerve damage and blindness.

Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) also called Juvenile onset diabetes mellitus or type 1 diabetes occurs when the pancreas are attacked by the body itself, due to a malfunction in the auto-immune system and therefore they become incompetent of producing insulin. Antibodies are proteins in the blood, which help fight diseases; these in type 1 diabetics are abnormal.

The symptoms of diabetes, which is dependent on the duration, and range of hyperglycemia is slow in case of type 2 diabetics and rapid in type 1 diabetic. The symptoms start mildly with skin rashes that heal poorly etc. then they proceed on to symptoms that are more prominent such as excessive thirst and urination and to the life threatening conditions. If people suffering from type 2 diabetes are unidentified for long, then they may start contracting complications due to diabetes. E.g. Kidney problems and foot problems!
