Type 2 Diabetes
Diabetes mellitus is a disease wherein the quantity of glucose builds up in
the bloodstream. The method of transporting glucose from the blood into the
various cells of the body is totally dependant on the hormone known as insulin.
When the insulin levels dips or are rendered useless, causing the glucose levels
to increase dangerously, it results in diabetes.
There are several types of diabetes, with the most common one’s being:
- Type-1 diabetes - often known as juvenile diabetes
- Type-2 diabetes - also called the adult onset diabetes
- Gestational Diabetes - diabetes detected during the gestation period
Pregnant patients stricken by Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes are said to be having
pre-gestational diabetes. At present we shall talk about Type 2 diabetes.
Although Type 2 diabetes commonly occurs in full grown adults over 40 years
of age, but diabetes has also been observed in people younger than 40,
especially in the high-risk group comprising of African Americans, South Asians,
Native Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans and African Caribbean people. It has
also been found among adolescents in UK.
The most usual kind of diabetes is the Type 2 diabetes which occurs when the
body is either unable to manufacture sufficient insulin or the cells don’t
utilize the insulin correctly. Sugar is the essential fuel for the body’s cells
giving it the energy required to sustain life. It is the insulin, which carries
the sugar from the blood into the cells. When the level of glucose starts
accumulating in the blood, instead of going within the cells then there can be
two complications:
- Immediately your cells may be deficient of energy
- With passage of time, high build up of sugar in the blood may harm your
body organs such as eyes, kidneys, heart and nerves
Type-2 diabetes is a hereditary problem and is frequently found in overweight
people. The indications are slight exhaustion and frequency in thirst and
micturition. As the indications are slight, the disease remains undiagnosed for
a long time. Patients of type 2 diabetes can be treated with a proper diet plan;
regular exercises, maintaining optimal body weight and careful blood sugar
screening.
There are no particular reasons for type-2 diabetes to occur, but some people
are at greater risks, such as:
- Obese people over the age of 40 with a family history of diabetes.
- Women with gestational diabetes, who give birth to babies weighing more
than 9 lbs.
Proper diabetes treatment and supervision of the disease can restrict or
delay its early onslaught. The two important methods of tackling Type 2 diabetes
are diet regulation and exercising. The treatment is targeted to assist patients
to control the blood sugar level and encourage obese patients to reduce weight.
When patients are unable to manage diabetes in spite of diet control and weight
management then it’s time the patients needed oral medication or insulin
injections.
The prescribed diet of Type 2 diabetics is similar to the nourishing diet
suggested for everyone. A wholesome balanced diet is essential for diabetic
patients, combined with exercises and reduction of body weight may stall the
onslaught of the disease. Studies have attributed whole-grains which are rich
sources of fiber, starch, vitamins and minerals as being beneficial in the
reduction of risks of several diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cancer and heart
disease. They also include antioxidants and phytoestrogens—which are vital in
disease avoidance.
Discovering the fact that you have diabetes can be a frightening prospect,
but stop being afraid. Type 2 diabetes is grave but diabetic people can have
long and salubrious lives.
